Heart Healthy Habits
Children are usually not showing overt
symptoms of heart disease or blood vessel problems. However, children
may have predisposing risk factors:
heredity, high blood pressure, high fat
diets, physical inactivity and obesity. Parents can diminish these risk
factors by encouraging heart healthy family habits:
Annual “tune-ups”
w/ your health care provider.
Ask for diagnostic testing, blood work, medical exam and dialogue to help
identify and address heredity factors, high blood pressure or high blood
glucose & cholesterol levels.
Daily Exercise
after School (for about 1 hour)
A game of tag, kickball, family walk or bicycle ride or trip to the YMCA or
local Youth Association field will increase oxygen intake and heart muscle
function, tone the body and tame stress levels. Limit video/tv/computer
screen time.
-
Responsible
Drinking
Offer the #1 thirst quencher – water - in at least 4 glasses or bottles a
day. Hydrate body tissues, cleanse impurities and energize! Offer milk at
every meal and snack for strong bones and protein needs.
-
Eating
Nutrient-Rich Foods
At meal and snack times, serve more vegetables, fruits, lean proteins
(fish, beans, poultry) and whole grains. Limit foods with saturated fats
(butter, red meats) and trans fats (cookies, donuts.) New, nutritious
foods are fun to try.
SIXTH GRADE PHYSICAL EXAM REPORTS
Please submit your 6th grader’s medical exam report to the
Nurse’s Office (and keep a copy for your home health file.) The
immunization (“shot”) record is not enough. Students deserve a “tune-up”
with their pediatrician to address health and developmental concerns in
order to be successful learners. The Pa. Dept. of Health requires that
all schools insure that children in grades K, 6th and 11th
have had a medical exam. If health insurance is a problem, please give us
a call. Thanks for your cooperation!
